THE GRETE PROJECT DEFINED READY-TO-UPSCALE GREEN CHEMICALS AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE WOOD-TO-TEXTILE VALUE CHAIN

MILANO, Italy, 27-Mar-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — On March 9th the GRETE achievements were celebrated by sharing them publicly with a high-profile audience. 220+ stakeholders of the cellulose value chain attended the 4th Cellulose Fibres Conference in Cologne, Germany. The project results were disseminated through different media: several oral presentations allowed the GRETE experts to expose the outcomes first-hand, while scientifically relevant details of the research work were illustrated through a total of 4 posters. Furthermore, a large exhibition set up in the conference foyer offered space for the GRETE samples, catching the interest of the attendees and stimulating the conversation with the present consortium members.

The innovative technologies developed in GRETE respond to the increasing demand for sustainable textile fibres. The work carried out in the research and innovation initiative commits to reducing the environmental footprint of the textile industry. The GRETE project has developed new and better technologies for wood pulp modification, cellulose dissolution and generation of high-quality textile fibres, complying with sustainability requirements and market needs.

Today, the textile industry is one of the most polluting industries globally, and the demand for textile fibres is estimated to nearly double by 2030 due to population growth. Man-made fibres based on natural polymers are a valuable alternative to fossil-based synthetic fibres and controversially sourced natural fibres. Accessing wood pulp, especially paper-grade pulp as a raw material for man-made cellulosic fibres may open up the current bottlenecks and enable a sustainable textile industry.

“Metsä Group makes use of every part of the tree for the purpose it is best suited for – logs are delivered to our sawmills, while pulpwood is used for pulp, biochemicals and further processing into other bioproducts. Thanks to the GRETE research we’re able to look at integrating the production of textile fibres into paper pulp production.”

Consortium partner Metsä Spring – Metsä Group

After almost four years of intense collaboration amongst the eight consortium members, GRETE is presenting innovative green chemicals for man-made cellulosic fibres manufacturing that are based on novel liquid salts. Thanks to chemical and enzymatic modification procedures for softwood and hardwood Kraft pulp, a novel raw material for bio-based textiles is made accessible. The fibre modification treatments developed enable introduction of fire-retardant and improved dyeing properties to the regenerated fibres.

“We aim to implement processes for the continuous improvement of environmental performance, reducing our ecological footprint, increasing the operational efficiency of our industrial units and raising productivity through the promotion of sustainable forest management. If the paper-grade pathway developed in GRETE will be further explored and scaled up, it will be a true breakthrough for the whole industry.”

Consortium partner Celbi – Altri Group

GRETE enhances the utilisation of wood biomass from sustainable European sources for the textile industry. Pulp manufacturing is already a highly competitive and sustainable bio-based industry in Europe. Combining novel cellulose-based textile manufacturing with such a solid platform is a key element in re-introducing extensive European man-made cellulosic fibre production. The industrial exploitation of the achieved results is expected to happen throughout the next decade.

The achieved results are going to be shared via the GRETE final webinar on March 29th 11:00 – 13:00 CEST. The online presentation is open and freely accessible upon registration, and offers the opportunity for a first-hand question & answer exchange with the experts involved in the research project.

Study: Europe automotive headliners market revenues to witness a 7.5% CAGR through 2026

DUBLIN 2, Ireland, 16-Oct-2018 — /EPR INDUSTRIAL NEWS/ — The broader disruption in the automotive sector is rubbing off on the Europe automotive headliners market, as vehicle interior air quality (VIAQ) adds to the litany of factors that influence buyer behavior. The growing consumer emphasis on interior air quality isn’t lost on component suppliers and OEMs. Incorporation of low-VOC materials and modular designs is gaining ground in the US$ 6.5 million Europe automotive headliners market, according to Fact.MR’s new study.

The Fact.MR study maintains an optimistic long-term outlook on the automotive headliners market in Europe. The study projects revenues to witness a 7.5% CAGR through 2026, with Western Europe at the forefront of sales and innovation. The lucrativeness of Europe’s automotive headliners market is likely to create a fair share of opportunities, as well as challenges for OEMs and component suppliers in the region.

Europe’s preeminence in the global automotive landscape is not limited to high production and exports alone – the region leads the way for enacting stringent emission regulations and their implementation. “Automotive headliner manufacturers can expect institutions like ACEA and VDA to focus inward, leading to stringency in VIAQ regulations,” says Nandini Roy Choudhury, Senior Consultant at Fact.MR. “Considering the fact that Europe exports a sizable number of vehicles to Asia Pacific, where most of the action is taking place, European OEMs and aftermarket suppliers also need to comply with the domestic regulations, such as the Guobiao and JAMA,” adds Ms. Roy

Growing Adoption of Low-VOC Materials in Manufacturing Automotive Headliners

According to Fact.MR’s study, a combination of global and region-specific factors will influence Europe’s automotive OEMs and aftermarket players to invest in low-VOC components. The transition of headliners from a simple covering to an integrated platform for vehicle peripherals has created the need for design innovation. The challenge to improve VIAQ has also led to experimentation with new materials, ranging from thermosets to water-based adhesives.

“The evolving consumer demand is multipronged – it is not going to impact only a specific set of players in the supply chain, but its effects are being felt across the spectrum. Unwavering focus on cabin air quality is driving adhesive companies to innovate, bringing recyclable and biodegradable raw materials to the forefront,” adds Ms. Roy.

Germany leads the Europe automotive headliners market, accounting for over one-fourth revenue share in 2017.

Players in Germany’s automotive headliner supply chain are reliant on the broader prospects of the automotive landscape, which has been encouraging in the last couple of years.

According to Germany’s Federal Motor Authority (KBA), Germany’s new car sales reached 3.44 million in 2017, witnessing an increase of 2.7% over the previous year. German headliner and adhesive manufacturers were also supported by positive momentum in Asia Pacific, where new car sales have created significant opportunities. “Germany is not only the leading production and sales market in Europe, but also a key exporter of cars and LCVs. We can expect Germany to take the lead in this new era of flexible, sustainable, and cost-effective headliners and other interior components,” opines Ms. Roy.

The European automotive headliner market may well be dominated by Germany, but France and UKclosely follow suit. The strength of the triumvirate can be gauged from the fact that these three markets collectively held a revenue share of over 65% in 2017. Automotive headliner sales in these three top markets are driven by encouraging sales in compact and mid-sized cars.

The design innovation and incorporation of new materials in headliners and interior parts manufacturing is likely to remain concentrated in the OEM landscape. “Aftermarket sales account for less than 30% share of the European automotive headliner market, so the onus is on OEMs to take the lead,” concludes Ms. Roy.

Wormald Urges Watercraft Owners To Consider Fire Protection

As many Australians take to the water to enjoy the long warm summer days, fire protection specialist Wormald is urging watercraft owners and operators to ensure they have adequate fire protection equipment on board.

According to Mark Brown, National Marine Manager with Wormald Technology, regardless of boat size or type, or whether it’s used for commercial or recreational purpose, careful consideration should be given to ensuring fire protection equipment is in place. “Inadequate or improper fire protection can, in the case of a fire, expose those on board to extreme dangers and lead to potential loss of equipment and assets.

“Before setting sail, it’s important to identify all fire hazards and install suitable fire protection equipment. The choice of fire extinguisher, fire blankets and fire detection equipment will depend on a vessel’s type and size so it’s a good idea to consult a fire protection expert”, says Brown.

Powder fire extinguishers ABE are the most widely used type of fire extinguisher and work by discharging a fine powder that smothers fire. Available in a range of sizes, they are suitable for most vessels.

Smoke alarms should be installed in cabin and saloon areas, and thermal detection systems should be considered for spaces where machinery is located. “In the event of a fire, smoke alarms can assist in providing the precious time needed to act or escape. Regularly check that the alarms are working by pushing the test button and replace batteries as necessary.”

Once fire protection equipment is installed, it should be regularly serviced to ensure it is in proper working order. “Any fire protection equipment on board should perform to the standard to which it was originally designed and installed to. Regular checks and servicing can help uncover any faults or issues that may prevent the equipment from working correctly at the time of greatest need,” says Brown.

Scaling Caused by Hard Water Can Be Prevented Without Using Environment Damaging Chemicals Or Water Softeners

The presence of calcium carbonate in water gives rise to the formation of a deposit of hard scale on surfaces particularly when water is heated. In dairies this is a severe problem where it forms on stainless steel and is required to be removed by using chemicals. These chemicals then have to be thoroughly rinsed off before equipment is reused to avoid contaminating the milk. Of course all the chemicals being rinsed off go into the drains and then into streams and rivers. But there is also another problem caused by the scale. In addition to being difficult to remove and reducing the efficiency of the plant presence of calcium provides a surface upon which protein matter can deposit and bacteria can then breed. This deposition is called milk stone.

Stainless steel is used for good reason in dairies because it is not prone to corrosion and has a very smooth surface… But Scale destroys all this and leads to the requirement to spend hours chemical cleaning and scouring.

Lalu Farms of Sparta Tennessee found a solution to this problem, one that was totally environment friendly and that saved hours on manpower, eliminated chemicals and reduced the risk of bacterial contamination.

By installing a Scaletron catalytic water conditioner manufactured by Fluid Dynamics International they were able to neutralise the calcium carbonate in the water so that it did not form a hard scale and did not stick to the pipework or other stainless steel surfaces. The end result as the owners of the dairy say in their report is that they “saved huge amounts of chemicals and tons of man hours and considerable amounts of money”. Milk stone has been totally eliminated since the installation of the Scaletron Catalytic conditioner that treats all the water coming from a well with 400ppm of hardness.
